Artisan Crafts - Friday InterviewsIt's Artisan Crafts month at ArtHistoryProject, to celebrate I will be publishing interviews on every Friday of December. These four interviews will feature very different artisans.
Origami is a very unique art form. When did you first develop an interest for it?
After seeing a great little origami dragon on a website, maybe two years ago, I decided I wanted to try and learn how to make it. It was then that I found out that there was a lot more to origami than I had previously thought. I have been enchanted by folding paper ever since.
How long does it take you on average to create an origami animal?
The times vary wildly from model to model. Some of the more complex ones I've folded took up to 10 hours total, if I include the painting time. There are a few in my gallery that can be done in 20 minutes or less. I have to mention that I am a bit of a

PE: Guidelines to Starting your Own Craft BusinessGuidelines to Starting your Own Crafting Business
So you make cute crafts, and probably someone offered you money for them. Maybe you need the money, and if you're like me, you need it to buy more crafting supplies. Whatever the reason, starting your own crafty business is a decisions that you should take seriously... it's not as easy as opening an Etsy account and setting some random prices for your work. There is a lot of things to consider to keep the business going, your money safe, your name clean, and your costumers happy.
By no means this is an absolute guide, merely a few guidelines of things I've found important or questions I get asked often by people interested in opening their own business. Most of this tips are intended for online selling, but they should apply for other ways of selling too. I will probably do more detailed guides in the future, as I learn more myself.
To begin with, don't forget to research as much as you can! If you're rea
The CR Stamp Project
Stamps are a great way to show your support for a project, a person or a group of people, spread awareness for a cause or promote a contest. It is also valid to do them just for fun, with just a funny image and/or message.
Since their introduction to the deviantArt galleries, millions of stamps have been created with a great variety of messages, both silly and serious, and you can see them all over the place, from journals to profile widgets.
The Community Relations department exists to encourage, facilitate and develop the relationship with our deviantART community. Our goal is to nurture our community by encouraging, stimulating artists to create, collaborate, and participate in a friendly, safe, and supportive artistic environment.

This week we set out to find the answer to the question; How to contribute to the community?
Here's what we learnt about:
Art Features & Daily Deviations

Organising Projects & Contests
PE Daily Deviations- Presentation of your workHello all!
Well we’ve had a fascinating week so far; a week which hopefully has provided some insight not only to the process of DD selection but helped you understand what we look for in DDs as CVs. As we draw to the end of this week, I bring you an article which will whet your Saturday with thoughts that don’t just apply to the DD feature, but something which should be a consideration to everything you submit to dA. I am talking about deviation presentation.
Why is Presentation important?
Art isn’t always about just being “creative”. There are techniques and skills which develop over time which contribute to the quality of the work you produce and alongside this comes a developed understanding of good presentation.
Good presentation could be anything from cropping a photograph, to spell checking your literature. These are common sense things that in the rush of wanting to show off your creativity can sometimes be
Community Voices: What is a Daily Deviation?DDs: The deviantART definition
So, as the title says, What in the world IS a Daily Deviation (DD), anyway?
You know what deviantART says about it, right? Under :faq61: it says:
A small assortment of submissions are chosen each day by a select group of staff/volunteer members who wish to showcase an image which they found impressive or otherwise interesting enough to deserve being brought to the attention of the community-at-large.
That says nothing about a DD being a perfect specimen of art-- in fact, it doesn't even use the word "art" at all. Basically, as CVs, when we are giving a DD, we are doing so because we think the image is interesting and well-done and deserves your attention. It may be technically exquisite. It may be technically quite good but exceptionally thought-provoking. It may be exceedingly creative. It may be all of these things! Above all else, it should stand out in some way from others in that medium or gallery.
July's Artisan Craft Monthly Challenge [+winners]It was extra hard choosing the winners this month. There were so many amazing entries. I honestly don't think I've ever had a challenge I've found this hard to choose winners for. So a massive thank you to everyone who contributed. It was an absolute pleasure to look through the entry gallery this month.
So after much deliberation, here are our winners:

Jan/Feb AC Monthly Challenge [+winners]At the end of each year, many of us take the time to reflect on what the year has brought in terms of both highs and lows. We look to the good things for encouragement, whilst paying mind to other things we'd like to improve on in the coming year. Some go as far as setting themselves formal goals and resolutions to achieve, whilst others simply internalise desires to go one better.
This is often the case among artists as we look back on our progress over the year. We celebrate the things we achieved, progressed in and became more skilled at. But we often think of the skills we're yet to develop and resolve to work on that in the new year.
In keeping with this spirit, the theme this month is New Years Resolutions. We're going to challenge you to embrace new crafts and skills you've always wanted to have a go at, but have never gotten around to.
Because I'm slightly late in kicking this off, and I'd like to give you as much time as possible to delve into new crafts, this is going

Welcome to Hell.What is this?
Samhain: Dante's Inferno is an interactive adventure here on deviantART to help us celebrate Halloween. It is sponsored by a small group of Community Volunteers and a few select community members and backed by Community Relations. The adventure will begin on October 10th and end on October 31st.
In the fourteenth century, an Italian poet named Dante Alighieri composed one of the most influential collections of poetry of all time: The Divine Comedy. In the first book, Inferno, Dante himself ventures through Hell, guided by the spirit of the Roman poet Virgil.
Samhain is a Sabbat, or blessed day of festival, that some Wiccans and some other pagan traditions celebrate in October. It is the day in which the spirits of the dead are closest to us, a day to celebrate those who have passed before us.
. . . What better time to visit the souls of Hell?
What do I have to do?
Attention all artisans: stop undercharging! As a member of the Artisan Craft community here at DeviantART, I looove to browse around the AC galleries and see what other deviants are up to, what things are trending, and look for up and coming artists to feature in the future. But sadly there's one trend I've been noticing that is very, very bad.
Undercharging your work!
Let's start off with the most important thing. Now I know some cheap buyers love these low prices, but let's be honest cheap buyers-- you're not long term supporters. People who want your work for super cheap are people who will haggle or snag a deal and run. There is nothing wrong with having sales, getting rid of old charms for cheap, or even doing discounts for special occasions but you can't cater to the cheapskates! xD You want people who appreciate handmade items for what they are. And that's a unique, quality piece.
If someone wants to buy all your hard work for just $5, perhaps you could redirect them to Forever21 to get some mass produced jewelry i
Craft a Moustache ContestWhat is Movember?
During the month of November each year, Movember asks men across the world to grow a moustache (or Mo') with the aim of raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health issues. Mo Bros are helping to change the face of men’s health by effectively becoming walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by promoting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health. Together, we are truly changing the face of men’s health.

Texture Your World ContestTell us the story of your world in textures!
We are surrounded 24 hours a day by objects that have texture, they may be smooth or bobbly, old or new, bold, bright, shiny or dull. You might see a texture every day and never notice it until you start looking. Do you sit at a desk that's textured, or pass an interesting tree on the way to work or school?
We want you, in the form of a triptych (thats 3 images forming a larger image see example here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triptych ) to tell us the story of your textured world. Each individual texture should stand on its own, both as a useful resource and as a cohesive part of the whole story. What story you tell through your texture triptych is up to you - but they must be textures that tell a story of your world in some way.
There are 3 categories for this contest, each of which you can submit to twice.
These are textures created digitally by
Winners of the Halloween Murder Mystery Contest! What happened?
We are pleased to announce the winners of the Halloween Murder Mystery Contest that was run through Halloween-HQ! First, let us tell you exactly what happened.
The killer was the Queen of Hearts. Ruthless and cold, she set out to kill Prince Charming for repeatedly spurning her unwanted shows of affection. She used a thin knife and struck when the lights went out during the castle ball. Quickly realizing what she had done and that she had gotten the wrong victim, she fled across Fairyland, through the dark forest, and back to her own castle.
Well, we originally had 3 prizes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place based on scores from the characters you visited. (You didn't know you were being scored, did you?) But, when we ended up with 825 participants, we figured we needed to up the prizes a bit, too. Moonbeam13 over in Community Relations is a goddess, and she made the prizes even BIGGER!
A Word about DepressionI am not a clinician. The opinions expressed in this journal are only mine, although they are informed by scientific evidence. The purpose of this article is to raise awareness about depression and mental health. It is not intended to serve as a substitute for guidance from a qualified mental health professional.
It's been a while since I wrote about mental health. Maybe that's because I've been feeling great. When I did write about mental diseases, it was almost always bipolar disorder because that's what I know the most about. But I think depression is a common complaint in our deviantART community as well, and I wanted to reach out to some of you who may be feeling alone. You're not alone. In fact, thousands if not millions of people around the world are feeling the same way right now. Let's support each other.
Depression is a mood disorder-- that is, a medical condition that impacts how you feel mood-wise. Depression is more than just "having a bad day." It va
